Pinar del Rio, Cuba.- Hurricane Michael, which affected Cuba’s westernmost tip recently, did not jeopardize tobacco crops, the president of the Tabacuba business group, Justo Luis Fuentes, said.
After visiting several municipalities in Pinar del Rio that were damaged by the cyclone, Fuentes expressed confidence in local tobacco growers in this province, Cuba’s largest tobacco producer.
They are working in all sites to compensate for the damage, especially in the nurseries that will provide the seeds for plantings, he said.
We have the necessary resources to repair the damaged crops and to work with organization and efficiency, he said.
According to preliminary reports, about 60,000 nurseries, some planted hectares and 12 tobacco houses were lost in the region of Vuelta Abajo.
We can move forward and we have already started planting in many areas and it will gradually spread throughout the province, Fuentes said.
The 2018-2019 tobacco campaign officially began on October 10 in Cuba, covering more than 30,000 hectares nationwide.
