Havana, Cuba.- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel called on Tuesday for the end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade the United States government has maintained against the Caribbean nation for almost six decades.

On October 31, the UN General Assembly will vote for a 27th consecutive year a draft resolution calling for the end of the U.S. siege against Cuba.

Since 1992, the initiative has had a majority support at UN’s main deliberative body.

On the last three occasions, 191 of 193 UN member states supported the resolution. In 2017, only the United States and Israel voted against it.

For 26 years, the international community has supported similar initiatives in the multilateral body, where the U.S. siege receives qualifications such as crime, injustice, violation of human rights, obstacle for development and vestige of the Cold War.

The Cuban president has thousands of followers on Twitter, after his account was opened on October 10 on occasion of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the struggles for the independence of the Caribbean nation.
