Havana, Cuba.- Cuba’s Parliament is within hours to proclaim in solemn session the island”s new Constitution, which was ratified by the people in a referendum last February 24 by 7 million Cubans, 86,5 per cent of the vote.
It is considered a modern set of laws in tune with the new realities the country is going through. It introduces changes for instance in the structure of the State like the creation of the Prime Minister and acknowledges several forms of properties including private and the importance of foreign investmen. It further strengthens people’s power from the municipaliies upward and widens individual and collective rights and guarantes.
Legislators will proclaim it at a special session of Parliament at the Convention Center of Havana on a historical day when the first Constitution of Cuba was issued on April 10, 1869. Then, the island was fighting its first war of independence against the Spanish colonial rule.
