UNITED NATIONS, New York. – The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted this Monday a resolution creating a new political mission to accompany the peace process in Colombia.

The initiative aims to support the next phase of the implementation of the Peace agreement signed in November by the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-the People’s Army, after years of negotiations in Havana.

According to the text, the new mission will support the political, economic and social reintegration of the guerrillas, the process´s security, and the protection and organization of the territories previously affected by hostilities.

In a letter addressed to the Security Council and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, on June 5, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos expressed the interest of the parties in the new force, and pointed out elements of its mandate.
