HAVANA, Cuba. – With the presence of Miguel Diaz-Canel, President of the Councils of State and Ministers and the Second Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Jose Ramon Machado Ventura it was held in this city the annual balance of the Ministry of Agriculture.

In the meeting also attended by First Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa and other leaders of the state, Diaz-Canel recognized the organizational advancement of the sector, a process that allowed greater productive results.

The Cuban President pointed out the importance of the development of agriculture to the national economy, which means a commitment for all to continue working to achieve the so necessary food sovereignty.

Diaz-Canel called to sow more, to make better hiring of productions, to guarantee the payment to peasants and to reinforce the role of the body responsible of collection, a way to control the price of food.

Science and Agriculture Marching Together

In the annual balance of the Ministry of Agriculture, the President of the Councils of State and Ministers, called to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles and to enhance the scientific innovation needed to counteract the effect of climate change.

He highlighted the relevance of achieving productive linkages with other ministries, as this makes it possible to boost the country’s economy and replace imports, mainly in tourism.

Diaz-Canel also called to analyze the livestock program, with the aim of producing more meat, milk, pork, as well as recovering chicken, so that the population is guaranteed a better food.

When referring to municipal self-sufficiency, he said that in order to guarantee 30 pounds per capita, it is necessary to plan well productions, to control and follow up to what is sown.

A Change of Mindset Is Necessary

The Second Secretary of the party, Jose Ramon Machado Ventura called to change mentality about the importance of planting animal food in Cuba.  

During the annual Balance of the Ministry of Agriculture he said this thought must be rooted in ranchers, because although it is always necessary to import some level of feed, it is not the same as buying one hundred percent as it currently happens.

For his part, Minister of Agriculture Gustavo Rodriguez emphasized the need to hire everything that is produced, to make an efficient use of land and to take maximum advantage of the few areas under irrigation.
