PHILIPSBURG, St. Martin.- Hurricane Irma went this Wednesday through San Martín Island, located to the east of Puerto Rico, with devastating results for its intensity, but no loss of human lives have been reported to the moment, Jamaican daily The Observer reported.

Princess Juliana International Airport was destroyed, security fences were demolished, the sand in Maho Beach reached the airfield track, and several images show how the waters flooded the check-in of and the gateways to aircraft access disappeared.

Hurricane Irma hit the French-Dutch island in the early hours of the morning, leaving a trail of devastation in houses and hotels. Government buildings were reduced to rubble.

Mass evacuations on San Martín Island began immediately, while humanitarian aid agencies prepare for an urgent response.
