United Nations. – Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, condemned today the decision of the two majority formations of the Nepalese Parliament to open a political trial to the President of the Supreme Court, Sushia Karki.

The deputies from the Communist Party and the Nepalese Congress party filed a motion alleging that Karki violated the Constitution by invading the Executive’s powers when she revoked the government’s appointment of the number three in the national police.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein thinks the prosecution of the first woman president of the Nepalese Supreme Court is an attempt on the part of the government to attack the independence of the judiciary.

The diplomat pointed out that the allegations by the ruling parties accusing the President of the judiciary of usurping the Executive´s prerogatives suggest a misunderstanding of the functions of an independent judiciary.
