43rd G-7 summit in Sicily

Rome, Italy. – Heads of State or Government of the countries of the Group of Seven (G-7) began this Friday its 43rd G7 summit in Taormina, Sicily, without consensus on fundamental issues.

Fight against terrorism is the center of the deliberations presided by Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni. German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and French president Emmanuel Macron also attend.

American President Donald Trump, the Prime Ministers of Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom; and the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission.

Laying the groundwork for a renewed trust is the motto chosen by Italy as the group’s chairman, for a year in which previous ministerial meetings were held in the fields of culture, energy, foreign affairs and finances; in the coming months the other eight will be developed.

The Italian proposal rests on three fundamental pillars: protection of citizens, economic, environmental and social sustainability, together with reduction of inequalities and innovation, skills and work in the era of the new production revolution.

These three large areas include the 12 objectives, which, in the opinion of the Italian Government, should draw the pattern of the deliberations.

In addition to terrorism, other purposes are the management of migratory flows and human mobility in general; stability in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and North Africa; inclusive growth, energy and climate change, food security and nutrition, and health and education, among others.

Although the agenda is extensive, the focus will surely be on the four or five burning aspects due to their impact and topicality. On some of these items discrepancies persist, which makes Gentiloni´s task more complex in the leadership of the meeting.
