HAVANA, Cuba. – Tropical cyclones, frequent phenomena in the Caribbean area, are considered to be the most recurrent and most impacted hydrometeorological events in society.
Those phenomena are formed in the sea and constitute centers of low pressures around which the wind turns in the opposite direction to clock´s hands.
According to the Weather Institute, the destructive effects of hurricanes are due to the early rise of the sea level causing flooding, abundant rainfall and wind power, issues that cause major disasters.
To keep informed constantly and to comply with the Civil Defense´s orientations, the Weather Institute and the local authorities is guarantee to face the approximation of a cyclone, and at the same time its passage through any populated zone.
Main Measures of Informational Phase
When the cyclone threats the national territory in the following 72 hours, the Civil Defense decrees the informative phase.
Important elements to take into account at that stage are keeping radio, television, and any media constantly tuned in, as well as keeping an eye on the weather and taking protection measures in homes, properties, animals and crops.
Other measures in the informative phase are to protect building materials in the open and strictly comply with the provisions of local authorities.
At this stage the essential thing is to be well informed by radio and television. Cuba has experience in confronting these meteorological phenomena, so the people should be attentive.
