Havana, Cuba.- Less than 24 hours for the beginning of general election in Cuba, the National Electoral Commission (CEN) is putting the finishing touches to ensure the success of the voting. More than eight million Cubans are registered to vote on Sunday to elect the delegates to the People”s Power municipal assemblies.
During the week, CEN members in all municipalities of the country focused on correcting the deficiencies detected during the general trial held on November 19.
During the trial, aspects such as the opening of polling stations and its conditions, the presence of authorities, data transmission, vote counting, communication and logistics were tested.
According to CEN President Alina Balseiro, the trial involved supervisors, collaborators, support personnel, vote-counting groups and mass organizations who will collaborate in the neighborhoods.
As part of the preparations, electoral authorities implemented a broad training program and verified the lists of voters.
On Sunday’s election, 27,221 delegates, nominated in neighborhoods and communities, will run to head the municipal assemblies.
The most represented age group among candidates is 41-50 years, although there are candidates of all ages, the CEN president said.
Balseiro added that on this occasion, there is an increase in the number of candidates from the non-state economic sector, compared to previous elections
On the other hand, about 5,000 young people have been nominated and women account for more than 35 percent of candidates.
The second round of election is scheduled for December 3 in those constituencies where none of the candidates wins more than 50 percent valid votes.
