Havana, Cuba.- The European Union (EU) currently has a very steadfast position against the extraterritorial application of the Helms-Burton Law against Cuba, the EU bloc’s ambassador in Havana, Alberto Navarro, said.

The Spanish diplomat told Prensa Latina that Brussels does not accept the US wanting to apply its legislation to other countries in the world, as this is contrary to international law.

The impact of this legislation, approved in 1996 by the US Congress, is to discourage investors, create fear and uncertainty for those who want to invest in Cuba, Navarro stated.

The ambassador considered that the EU defends this position from the very moment the regulations were approved and highlighted the support of other countries such as Canada, Mexico or Japan which have antidotes laws.

Navarro also stated that this position was reaffirmed last week at a meeting in Brussels between Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

The European bloc recently filed a lawsuit in the World Trade Organization against this law and announced the possibility of applying the ‘blocking statute’, which prohibits the application in EU territory of US rulings on Title III.

It also allows defendants to receive compensation in European courts.
