Havana, Cuba.- The Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Houlin Zhao, has acknowledged in Geneva Cuba”s advances in expanding the use of information technology.

At a meeting with the island’s Deputy Communication Minister Ernesto Rodriguez, ITU’s head highlighted Cuba’s advances in the field despite the economic, financial blockade the US Government is lately hardening.

Zhao reaffirmed with the support of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres ITU’s stance on reporting on the negative effects of Washington’s unilateral hostile policy on the field of telecommunications.

Official data from the Cuban Communication Ministry show that currently over 5 million people in the island has access to Internet through several ways.

Zhao also congratulated the Cuban web project ‘RedPinar’, winner of the prize of the World Information Society Summit 2019 in the category of the role of governments and players in the promotion of ITs.

He reiterated the invitation to Cuba to attend ITU-Telecom conference in September, 2019, in Budapest, Hungary.
