HAVANA, Cuba. – At the request of the Political Bureau, the plenary of the Provincial Party Committee in Holguín agreed to release Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar from the position of First Secretary, and instead elected Ernesto Santiesteban Velazquez, who has served as a professional member of the Executive Bureau in this Committee for seven years.

Santiesteban Velazquez is a graduate in Education and has a wide career as a professional cadre of the Young Communist League of Cuba and the Party, occupying in the latter the responsibilities of First Secretary of the Municipal Committee, head of the Ideological department and professional member of the executive Bureau in the Provincial Committee.

The participants in the plenary highlighted the outstanding work of Torres Iribar during five years at the head of the Provincial committee, a period in which favorable results were achieved.

Elected New First Secretary of the Communist Party in Havana

The plenary of the Provincial Party Committee in Havana, on a proposal from the Political Bureau, agreed to release Lazara Mercedes Lopez Acea from the position of First Secretary, and instead elected Luis Antonio Torres Iribar.

Torres Iribar is a graduate in Social Sciences and has extensive experience as a professional cadre of the Young Communist League of Cuba and the Party, occupying in the latter the responsibilities of First Secretary in the provincial committees of Guantanamo and Holguin.

The participants in the plenary recognized the outstanding work of Lazara Mercedes Lopez during nine years at the head of the Provincial Committee. Partner Lazara Mercedes will be promoted as a member of the Party’s Central Committee Secretariat.

The plenaries were presided over by Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, second Secretary of the Party’s Central Committee.
