HAVANA, Cuba. – The anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese to Cuba was held this Friday at the Embassy of China in this capital with the presence of diplomatic representatives, officials and residents of both nations.

In his words of welcome, Cuban Ambassador Miguel Angel Ramirez recalled the arrival of the Spanish brig Oquendo. He also remarked that since then, the bonds of friendship between Cuba and China are becoming increasingly profound, marked by the spirit of rebellion and tradition of struggle of the Chinese, when they joined the Cuban independence wars.

According to the diplomat, the outstanding contribution of those coolies allowed not few of them to occupy important positions in the military leadership of the Liberating Army.
