Cuban Parliament.

HAVANA, Cuba. – As we have already reported, the National Candidacy Committee works on evaluating the proposals made by members, with a view to shaping the candidatures that will be presented on April 19 for the election of the new direction of Parliament and the members of the Council of State.

On the subject, the Vice-President of the Commission, Alfredo Machado Lopez, points out that the aforementioned candidatures are put on that day for consideration by the National Assembly, in open voting.

This process is first made for the election of the head of Parliament, and then for the Council of State. Machado Lopez emphasizes it is a right of the legislators to modify in whole or in part the respective candidatures.

In both cases, he says, after being approved they are submitted to the free, direct and secret vote of the deputies.

Other Precisions

In Cuba, the President of the Council of State is elected in second-degree elections, that is, it is for the deputies, elected by the people and on their behalf, to approve the candidacy and then, directly and secretly, exercise their right to vote.

To reach that moment, since general elections were convened last June, different electoral steps were given, in which the people or their elected representatives participated directly.

In accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Law, Article 145, the members elected to the Council of State take possession of their positions before the National Assembly of People´s Power.
