HAVANA, Cuba. – How is the number of deputies to the National Assembly of People’s Power determined? We answer this question in our section on Thursdays.

Legislators are elected at a rate of 1 for every 20 000 inhabitants of a municipality or fraction greater than 10 000. In case that the number of inhabitants of a municipality is 30 000 or less, two deputies are always elected.

What positions can they be elected for? For President, Vice-President or Secretary of the National Assembly of People’s Power; Member of the Council of State, Member of any of the committees of the Parliament or President, Vice-President or secretary of these.

Other functions are President or Vice-President of provincial or municipal assemblies of People´s Power, President or Vice -President of Popular Councils, and delegate to provincial or municipal assemblies.

On 11 March, more than one million voters in Havana will be able to elect the 106 deputies to the National Assembly of People’s Power and 141 delegates to the Provincial Assembly, nominated last January.

The Vice-President of the Provincial Electoral Commission, Pedro Viltres, explained that the candidates carry out tours and exchanges in communities, workplaces and educational centers in the different municipalities of the capital.

He said that in order to guarantee the quality of the process, the electoral commissions of constituency in Havana work review and conciliate the lists of voters to verify their updating.

Besides, they carry out training actions for district, constituency, polling stations, special commissions and reception, processing and data-counting groups.

Cienfuegos Consolidates Preparation for Elections

The elections of deputies to the National Assembly and delegates to the Provincial Assembly of People´s Power are organized in Cienfuegos with the diffusion of the candidates´ biographies, training of electoral authorities and the preparation of the dynamic test.

Jose Alberto Gomez Puerto, Secretary of the Provincial Electoral Commission, stated that at this stage of the general elections the Candidacy commissions carries out a period of public information.

The official said that for that purpose they published the biographies of the elected ones, who currently have direct and personal exchanges with the communities in workplaces and educational centers, as well as in neighborhoods.

Gomez Puerto assured that in this step of the electoral process schedule the authorities verify the lists and check house by house to complete the voter registrations.

Representatives of the People Tour the Pearl of the South

With the premise of the vote united for the country in the general elections of March 11, the candidates to the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power in Cienfuegos and members of Parliament exchange with workers, students and people.

The tour includes work and educational centers, communities and military institutions to inform on the importance of attending at ballot boxes to elect their representatives.

Lidia Esther Brunet Nodarse, First Secretary of the Party Cienfuegos and candidate to Member of Parliament, said these meetings contribute to strengthen the links with the population.

The photos and biographies of the proposed ones are exposed in public places to spread the trajectory of the best and most capable men and women from all sectors.

Born in Santiago, but a Candidate in Ciego de Avila

Orlando Abreu Gorguet is one of the young people in Ciego de Ávila who feels proud of being a candidate for delegate to the Provincial Assembly of People´s Power.

Born in Santiago de Cuba province, where he was also a district delegate, the resident in Mario Muñoz Monroy Third Eastern Front, stated that it is essential to strengthen links with the people.

Abreu Gorguet is the president of Vicente Popular Council, in Ciego de Avila, and after exchanging with the population this Tuesday he said that contact with voters in urban and rural areas demonstrates the country’s genuine democracy process.

He added that, as a candidate for delegate to the Provincial Assembly of People’s Power, is pleased to continue defending the interests of a people that will respond, once again, in the general elections.
