Eugenio Martinez, Director General of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The United States Government has no moral authority, Martinez said.

HAVANA, Cuba. – The Cuban Government strongly condemned today a resolution against Venezuela approved by the Organization of American States (OAS) last Tuesday.

A statement by the Chancellery, read by the Director General of Latin America and the Caribbean, Eugenio Martinez, denounced that this resolution contravenes international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

After detailing that the pressures of several OAS member States prevented an agreement between the Venezuelan Government and the opposition, the Cuban diplomat said the text adopted by the continental organization does not contribute to the dialogue in Venezuela.

The United States Government has no moral authority, as does not have the discredited OAS, to provide lessons in democracy and human rights, Martinez said, who highlighted the position of many countries that did not support the text.

An Incitement to Violence

We demand respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of Venezuela, expressed in the elections of May 20, Eugenio Martinez, director general of Latin America and the Caribbean of the Cuban Chancellery, said.

On the recent OAS resolution, Martinez explained it calls for measures to destabilize Venezuela’s internal order, which means incitement to violence and the imposition of unilateral sanctions and coercive measures.

These measures create difficulties, provoke affections to the Venezuelan people and are incompatible with the principles of international law and contrary to the proclamation of Latin America as a zone of peace, the Cuban diplomat denounced.

Eugenio Martinez reiterated Cuba’s strong support for the Bolivarian and Chavez revolution, and its legitimate and democratic government.
