United Nations, United Nations.- UN General Secretary, Antonio Guterres, is aware of what comes out the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, which is currently generating great rejection among the international community.

According to Guterres´s deputy spokesman Farhan Haq, UN General Secretary met early last week with UN Cuban ambassador Ana Silvia Rodriguez, and discussed the Helms-Burton, recently in force by the United States, Haq assured to Prensa Latina.

In this regard, the deputy spokesman stated that the unilateral economic measures adopted by the Member States ‘must be consistent with the principles and regulations of international law.’

However, the extraterritorial nature of such Act has been rejected for 27 years in UN General Assembly by means of the resolution that requests to end the US blockade against Cuba.

That statement expresses concern about the continued enactment and application of acts and regulations, such as the Helms-Burton Act, whose effects undermine the sovereignty of other States.

It also damages the legitimate interests of entities or people under its jurisdiction and trade freedom and navigation, the resolution indicates.

The members of UN General Assembly reiterated their appeal last year to all States to refrain from promulgating and applying laws and measures of such nature, in accordance with their duties under the Charter and international law.

Although the blockade has remained in effect, all US administrations since 1996 suspended the implementation of these titles due to harms it can cause to corporate interests, he stressed.

Likewise, Haq stressed, they avoided taking such an aggressive action on account of the strong opposition that putting Title III of the Act in force arouses in the international community, including its close allies because of its illegal extraterritorial reach.
