ROME, Italy.- The representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), Marcelo Resende, sent a congratulations message to the Cuban farmers, highlighting the key role of this sector.

FAO salutes this commemoration of May 17, Peasant’s Day in Cuba, the 72nd anniversary of Niceto Perez´s death and the 59th of the first Agrarian Reform Law.

It also reiterates its support to the island and its farmers to accompany national initiatives, to continue reinforcing the bilateral agenda in the priority areas of the nation.

During a recent visit to Havana, its regional representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Julio Berdegue, commented that Cuba has been working on the Zero Hunger slogan since 1959, while the United Nations picked it up only in 2015.
