Havana, Cuba.- The first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Raul Castro; and the President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, sent wreaths to the funeral of Cuban artist Salvador Wood, who died last Saturday at 90 years of age.

Wood’s funeral takes place in the National Theater, where family and fans of his work pay posthumous homage.

Last Sunday, Diaz-Canel sent his condolences to Wood’s family. Human beings like Salvador Wood never die, the President tweeted.

The Cuban President added the renowned artist leaves ‘an impressive legacy of his coherent and rich revolutionary, ethical and artistic life’.

Wood, National Television Award for the Work of a Lifetime, is remembered for his role in Cuban films such as The Teacher (El Brigadista, in Spanish) and ‘The death of a Bureaucrat’. (La muerte de un Burócrata).

Media report that the actor was born on November 24, 1928 in Santiago de Cuba, east of Cuba, and arrived in the capital in 1946 in search of better opportunities in his acting career.

His first jobs were in the radio in 1943 in a program about the execution of the eight Medicine students, executed by the Spanish colonial forces on November 27, 1871.

Salvador Wood’s prolific career earned him the ACTUAR Award for the Work of a Lifetime, in 2016.

However, as he himself said in several interviews, the best award was always the people’s affection to his contribution to the Cuban scenic arts.
