For the unit of our America
Havana, Cuba.- Solidarity does not have borders and for that reason in Cuba there are thousands of young people from other countries training as doctors in the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM).
The project was born as a Fidel´s initiative when Mitch Hurricane whipped Central American nations, which did not count on the health cover to face the disaster.
In ELAM there are spaces for cultural exchange between peoples. It is the reflection of the unit Latin America needs. That was expressed to this radio station by four students that are studying free in that institution, to take hope to their peoples.
Haitian Natalie Saintmartin, Paraguayan Ever Ramón Aguilera, Panamanian Jerónimo Valdés, and Dominican Joan Manuel Ortiz feels proud to study in the Latin American School of Medicine.
A example of solidarity
The impossibility of studying Medicine in their country, because it is very expensive, and the great world-wide prestige of Cuban doctors and its health system, among other factors, made Paraguayan Ever Ramón Aguilera to train as a doctor in the Island.
For him, who attends the second year in the Latin American School of Medicine, is a great opportunity to take part of that project of integration, and an immense commitment.
The same was expressed by the Panamanian future doctor Jerónimo Valdés, who emphasized that living together in ELAM with people from several countries has helped him to acquire an ampler vision of the Latin American and Cuban realities.
Another student, Dominican Joan Manuel Ortiz, of second year, affirmed he feels part of the Cuban people. “Cuba is my second home”, he emphasized.
Fighting against poverty
“In ELAM we are trained as General Integral Doctors, with a high scientific and humanist preparation”, the student of first year Natalie Saintmartin said..
The young Haitian recognized the work of the Cuban doctors, who are saving lives in her country, affected by a cholera epidemic. “They are an example to follow by all of us. It is another sample of Cuba´s contribution to the development of the peoples”, Saintmartin asserted.
Without question, for Haitian Natalie, Paraguayan Ever Ramón Aguilera, Jerónimo Valdés, from Panama, and Dominican Joan Manuel Ortiz to study in the Latin American School of Medicine is a dream come true.
They will always be thankful to Fidel and Cuba for the opportunity of training as doctors of science and conscience, in order to fight poverty in Latin America and all over the world.
