Santo Domingo, Dominicana.- The president of the Confederation of Professional Baseball of the Caribbean (CBPC), Juan Francisco Puello, today expressed confidence that the agreement between the Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) and Major League Baseball ( MLB) can be saved.

Speaking to Prensa Latina about the decision of the US president, Donald Trump, to end the pact reached in December, Puello said that it is important to reverse the denial and achieve what was agreed upon.

‘Although I do not usually comment on political decisions, you can not confuse this with sport and when that happens things get difficult,’ said the head of the CBPC.

He added that in his opinion that agreement was a great step achieved between both parties, which should not be reversed and in that direction efforts should be made.

Finally, the director of regional baseball recalled how what was achieved in the December negotiations was aimed at curbing the trafficking of people facing Cuban baseball players in their aspirations to play in the so-called Grand Tent, something endorsed in all world constitutions.

‘You cannot traffic with the dignity of the human being, with that you should not play,’ he concluded.

The FCB denounced on Thursday the decision of Trump to annul the agreement with the MLB, with which it was intended to end human trafficking and normalize the recruitment of Cuban baseball players to the majors.

He also refuted the use of unsustainable arguments for political purposes to undo the agreement, received at the time with enthusiasm by athletes, technicians and fans, knowing that it opens the doors to a safe and orderly insertion in the MLB.

The decision of the White House came 15 days after Cuba released a list of more than 30 eligible players to sign contracts with major league teams based on the agreement reached, which many considered historical.
