Jakarta, Cuba.- The President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) assured that he works to see a greater number of teams of the two Koreas unified in world sporting events, such as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

One of the objectives is that both the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea are co-hosts of the Asian Winter Games in 2021, said the head of the OCA, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, to the Japanese agency Kyodo.

The comments of the 55-year-old former president of the Kuwait Olympic Committee, which has been heading the OCA since 1991, come when the rapprochement between Pyongyang and Seoul has accelerated since the beginning of this year.

The two Koreas resorted to sports diplomacy to facilitate dialogue and, for the first time, presented combined teams at the Winter Olympics; and then, last Saturday, they paraded together at the opening of the Asian Games, in Indonesia.

At the sporting event, which takes place in the Indonesian capital until September 2, the DPRK and the Republic of Korea will present joint squads in women’s basketball, canoeing, and rowing.

The gesture, according to experts, symbolizes another step in the rapprochement between the two nations that inhabit the Korean peninsula and that have been technically at war for more than 70 years.
