HAVANA, Cuba.- The President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, reviewed the recovery and development programs of railways, and the research and prospecting of oil, among other matters.

According to a report broadcast this Tuesday on Cuban television, Diaz-Canel and Marrero also assessed foreign investment in the ministries of Industry and Interior Trade.

The meeting discussed the progress of major investments in rail transport, and the repair and acquisition of new equipment, among other topics.

The director of the Union of Railways, Eduardo Hernandez, reported on the transport of cargo and passengers, the availability of the existing railway park, and the rehabilitation and modernization of road infrastructure.

Urgent to Prioritize Rail Freight Transport

The President of the Republic, Miguel Diaz-Canel, urged to prioritize this year the transport of cargo via railway, being a more efficient means for the Cuban economy.

Leading a check-up meeting on Railway Recovery and Development Program, the Cuban President insisted on the impact achieved in this important sector during 2019 has to be maintained.

As the director of the Union of Railways of Cuba, Eduardo Hernandez reported, last year’s plan for freight shipments met in 91 percent.

In the last semester, Hernandez said, some loads that were previously carried only by motor vehicle were transported by railway, which contributed to fuel saving.
