HAVANA, Cuba.- “We are going to Peru to discuss the topics that are axes of the discussion there, but always from respect,” lawyer Yamila Gonzalez, spokesperson of the Coalition for an Inclusive and Respectful World assures.

This is one of the 28 coalitions, with the same number of issues, in which the hemispheric civil society will work a few hours before the eighth Summit of the Americas, to be held in Lima during April 13 and 14.

“The objective is this: as a legitimate Cuban civil society we share with organizations from other countries on how we work searching for sustainable development of our peoples, what unfortunately is not the priority in many places today,” the also vice-president of the National Union of Jurists.

From the perspective of a law professional, Yamila Gonzalez says corruption is an evil that corrodes Latin America today.

The Cuban Experience

Democratic governance in the face of corruption is the central theme of the eighth Summit of the Americas and, in this sense, Cuban civil society has much to show in Peru.

“We will expose the popular participation in the conception, execution and control of our social project,” jurist Yamila Gonzalez says.

The Vice-President of the National Union of Jurists points out that as we can best visualize what democratic governance is and the fight against corruption, it is when the citizenship itself is part of the whole process and above all of control.

“We are diverse in unity, which makes us strong and allows us to defend sovereignty, the main element to maintain our dignity as a nation,” Yamila Gonzalez says in reflecting on Cuba´s presence at the Summit of the Americas.
