United Nations, New York.- The United States blockade against Cuba constitutes a massive, flagrant and systematic violation of the human rights of that country, it was highlighted today in the UN Second Committee.

During her speech in that meeting, the third secretary of the permanent mission of Cuba to the UN, Biana Leyva, demanded the end of that policy that prevents the island’s people from developing at full capacity.

The diplomat also noted that sustainable development continues to urgently demand concrete actions and greater common efforts on the basis of a just and equitable world order.

There is a need for inclusive and coherent policies, a revitalized global partnership, an effective mobilization of financial resources, as well as the promotion of capacity development, including the transfer of technologies to developing countries, she said.

Likewise, Leyva pointed out that developed countries must fulfill their historic commitments and responsibilities.

Cuba’s representation called on the UN to give greater priority to the eradication of poverty, and showed that the global progress of the indicators of Sustainable Development is insufficient and unequal.

While unsustainable patterns of production and consumption proliferate, as well as the waste of large sums of financial resources for weapons and speculative purposes, the gap between the North and the South and the polarization of wealth increase, lamented the Cuban diplomat.

Since the beginning of the work of the different commissions, the U.S. blockade against Cuba has repeatedly emerged as the main obstacle to the development of that country, which also affects others due to its extraterritorial nature.
