26th Ibero-American Summit

ANTIGUA, Guatemala.- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla spoke on this Friday at the 26th Ibero-American Summit that takes place from the eve at Antigua, Guatemala.

The Chancellor passed on the representatives of all the participating nations the greetings of President Miguel Diaz-Canel, as well as the message of friendship of the people and Government of Cuba.

Rodriguez Parrilla referred to the unfair international economic and political order that impedes the construction of prosperous, inclusive and sustainable societies.

Humanity has enough material, financial and technological resources to eradicate poverty, hunger, preventable diseases and other scourges, but the political will of the industrialized countries is lacking, the diplomat said.

The Minister of Foreign Relations of Cuba pointed out that the patterns of production and consumption of capitalism are irrational and lead, inexorably, to the destruction of environment.

In the high-level segment of the Ibero-American event, Rodriguez Parrilla recalled that Latin America continues to be the most unequal region on the planet.

The richest 10% of the population appropriated 71% of wealth. It is estimated that in 2017, more than 187 million people lived in poverty and 62 million in conditions of extreme poverty, he added.

The head of the Cuban diplomacy added that in view of the increasing unilateral threats arising from the reinstatement of the Monroe doctrine, the observance of the principles contained in the “Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace” is essential.

Regarding the retirement of the Cuban collaborators of the More Doctors Program of Brazil, because of the position of President-elected Jair Bolsonaro, the Cuban Chancellor said:

On behalf of them, my people and my Government, I want to thank those millions of Brazilians who welcomed them with so much affection and now, with dear gratitude, they say good-bye to them, victims of political manipulation.

After enumerating the many difficulties Cuba is going through due to the intensification of America’s blockade, Rodriguez Parrilla emphasized that the Cuban people advances freely and sovereignly towards the development of an independent, sovereign, Socialist, democratic, prosperous and sustainable nation.
