Havana, Cuba.- Local media today highlighted the solidarity with Cuba and Venezuela at the Peoples” Summit in Peru, as well as the demands for Latin American and Caribbean unity.

The Cuban newspaper Granma noted that over the past few days, Lima hosted debates to find ways to counter external aggressions against progressive governments, including constant interfering statements by the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro.

Political scientists, analysts and other participants in the event, which is an alternative forum to the 8th Summit of the Americas, also defended the peoples’ right to self-determination and condemned the imperialist crusade by the U.S. government against Venezuela.

Granma also noted the participants’ solidarity with that South American country and Cuba, as well as the demands to end the political persecution of former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The newspaper Juventud Rebelde echoed the calls by representatives of the indigenous peoples, students and workers from Latin America to rearticulate popular and social movements in the region.

Local radio and TV stations and digital and printed media highlighted the defense of the 1959 Revolution’s gains by Cuban civil society.

Cuban students, workers, women, athletes, parliamentarians, religious people and entrepreneurs, among others, traveled to Lima to participate in forums related to the 8th Summit of the Americas.

On behalf of more than 2,000 organizations and association that make up Cuban civil society, that representation of their members explained the Caribbean island’s reality at the hemispheric forum.
