Madrid, España.-Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, is concluding today a two-day official visit to Spain, the first a foreign minister from the island has carried out for almost one decade.

Rodriguez, who was received yesterday by King Felipe VI and the President of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, invited both to visit Cuba to deepen the bilateral relations, which are going through an excellent moment, the two sides agreed.

During a news conference with his Spanish peer, Alfonso Dastis, the foreign minister confirmed the invitation to the monarch and the president of the Executive.

The Cuban foreign minister described as productive, cordial and useful the meetings he held with Rajoy and also with the Spanish head of State at the Zarzuela Palace, private residence of the royal family.

Dastis said that Madrid will work so that the visit of Felipe VI and that of the head of government are a success and occur as soon as possible, although he avoided specifying a date.

He stressed that his government has been interested in strengthening relations with the Caribbean island in the political, economic and social spheres.

Responding a Prensa Latina’s question, Dastis reiterated Spain’s rejection to the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on the island for more than 50 years.

He insisted that this European nation has been always opposed to that unilateral siege and hoped that the new U.S. administration of Donald Trump will maintain the policy of rapprochement with Havana started by his predecessor, Barack Obama.

Rodriguez highlighted the good moment of the bilateral relationship and was pleased and honored with the meetings he held with Felipe VI, Rajoy, the President of the Congress of Deputies, Ana Pastor, and Dastis himself.

During his last day in Madrid, the Cuban foreign minister will meet with leaders of important political forces before traveling to Portugal, second stop of a tour that will also take him to Greece.

The foreign minister’s visit takes place after the Caribbean country and the EU signed an agreement on political dialogue and cooperation in December 2016.

In Lisbon, the Cuban diplomatic head will have a meeting with his Portuguese peer, Augusto Santos Silva.

Rodriguez will travel to Athens on Friday, April 21st, to meet with Greek Foreign Minister, Nikolas Kotzias, and other leaders of the Greek government.
