Havana, Cuba.-The University of Havana turned today 298 years old, with its promise to continue contributing to the formation of integral professionals, according to the postulates by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

The University College San Geronimo de La Habana, the first premise of this university,founded in 1728, its rector, Gustavo Cobreiro, highlighted the boost by that paradigmatic revolutionary man, who died in November, to the development of sciences with a humanist approach.

His death established the great challenge of being better people, fighting for the predominance in our society of Marti’s opinion of finding and reaching the hugest possible amount of justice, he said.

He recalled that after the death of Fidel Castro was known, students, teachers and workers of that academic institution gathered at its premises and paid the saddest silence in his honor, of which the slogan ‘I am Fidel’ arouse, being extended later to the whole country,

In the rally, historian of the city of Havana and grand master of the college, Eusebio Leal, highlighted the role of that institution, created by Dominican Friars almost three centuries ago, in consolidating the Cuban nationality, as well as its contribution to the historic evolution of the country.

This activity started the program to commemorate the 290th anniversary of the emblematic college, where the book ‘Fidel in The University Student Tradition,’ written by Francisca Lopez and Fabian Fernandez, will be presented today.
